Journalism is a profession that brings one face-to-face with life’s most difficult moments and requires one to keep one’s own voice quiet while striving to be the voice of society. Years of economic uncertainty, a climate of repression, digital harassment, and job insecurity are compounding the challenges inherent to the profession, creating conditions that strain journalists not only professionally but also personally.
Many journalists believe that “to be good at this job, you have to be strong.” This is true—but being strong does not mean refusing to ask for help or refusing to admit when you’re struggling.
Published by the Turkish Journalists’ Union (TGS), this guide was prepared with a focus on the realities faced by journalists working in Turkey. Its purpose is to help understand risk factors, describe what it feels like to be overwhelmed, provide basic skills in psychological first aid, and make it easier to access support resources.
