The Women and LGBTI+ Commission of the Turkish Journalists’ Union was established on November 25, 2013.

Under the slogan “End the male-dominated language in the media,” journalists in the sector began the commission’s work on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Since 2013, the Commission has conducted studies on the physical, verbal, psychological, and economic violence, as well as workplace bullying, experienced by women and LGBTI+ journalists in the media sector.

The Commission has provided training on the violence faced by women and LGBTI+ journalists and on violence-related news coverage in the media, and has issued press releases.

In 2023, the TGS amended its bylaws to formally establish the commission.

To combat discrimination and violence in the sector, the TGS Gender Equality Policy Document came into effect in 2026.

The TGS Women and LGBTI+ Commission continues its work with a five-person secretariat team and female and LGBTI+ journalists who are members of the union.
